Enid Neihardt, along with her sister Hilda, accompanied her father, John G. Neihardt, to the Pine Ridge Reservation in the summer of 1931. While on the reservation Enid acted as Neihardt's secretary, recording the interview with Black Elk and other Sioux Indians in shorthand. She later transcribed these notes for her father's use in writing Black Elk Speaks. As a memoir of her trip to Pine Ridge Reservation, Enid compiled a scrapbook containing photographs of Sioux Indians and festivals as well as handwritten notes on the events.
