Missourians understand that the principle of a “government of the people, for the people, and by the people” is the key to creating and maintaining a free and democratic society. The personal involvement of a diverse group of citizens is necessary for achieving not only true democracy, but also peace and justice.
Many Missourians, both women and men, have made important contributions in the area of politics and social activism. They have served our towns and cities, our state, our nation, and the world. Their dedication to public service has benefited us all in a variety of ways. Some Missourians have served the public humbly, making quiet but important changes during their lifetimes. Others have led boldly and courageously, with strong, inspiring voices that are still heard and felt today.
