Langston Hughes (1902–1967)

Langston Hughes was a poet, writer, and playwright. Born in Joplin, Missouri, Hughes became a crucial voice during the Harlem Renaissance, a literary movement of the 1920s. His work celebrates the lives of African Americans and speaks out against their struggles. Works such as Montage of a Dream Deferred have influenced many artists and civil rights activists. He is one of America’s best-known writers of the twentieth century.
