Thomas L. McKenney and James Hall co-authored and published History of the Indian Tribes of North America between 1836 and 1844. This 3-volume publication includes 120 hand-colored lithographs of portraits from the Indian Gallery in the Department of War at Washington, as well as biographical sketches and anecdotes of the principal chiefs. Charles Bird King and other artists painted the original portraits.
