McKenney and Hall wrote this biographical sketch of Mohongo that accompanies her portrait in History of the Indian Tribes of North America. The sketch reveals that the authors, like most European Americans of their time, lacked a fundamental understanding of native cultures. They believed that Indian people, like Mohongo, needed improvement that could only come through an education in Western culture. |
