[SHS 012596]

The Marquis de Lafayette was a French military officer who served in the Continental army under George Washington in the American Revolutionary War. He also encouraged the French government to provide more support to the rebellion. The U.S. government was so grateful for Lafayette’s military and diplomatic support during the war that President James Monroe later granted him an honorary U.S. citizenship.
