Charles Bird King (1785-1862) was an accomplished professional portraitist. He is best known today for his depictions of Native American dignitaries who came to Washington to confer with government officials. The King portraits were commissioned by Superintendent of Indian Affairs Thomas L. McKenney (1785–1859). The publication History of the Indian Tribes of North America featured portraits by King and other artists, along with biographies of the subjects.
