Richard Pilant was a professor of English at Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri, at the time he wrote to Allen McReynolds, a trustee of The State Historical Society of Missouri. Pilant wrote a book about Carver titled Poor Peoples Scientist and was instrumental in creating the national memorial in Diamond, Missouri.
