The president of the United States is the highest-ranking elected official in the nation and Missouri is proud to be the home of one of our countries presidents. The title "first lady" applies to both the wife of the president and the wife of the governor of a state. Although the first lady is not elected and carries no official duties, her role is important as the official hostess of the White House or the governor's mansion. The first lady often works on behalf of a special charity or humanitarian cause.
The State Historical Society of Missouri holds resources that document and illustrate the lives of Harry and Bess Truman as well as other first ladies of Missouri.
