Claiborne Fox Jackson, a former state representative and senator, became governor of Missouri in January 1861. He was deposed by a state convention in July 1861 because of his Confederate sympathies. He served, unofficially, as the governor of the Missouri government in exile in Arkansas until his death on December 6, 1862.
