The term “first lady” applies to both the wife of the president of the United States and the wife of the governor of a state. Although “first lady” is not an elected position, carries no official duties, and receives no salary, it is an important position at both the national and state levels. The first lady is the official hostess of the White House or the governor’s mansion. She attends many official ceremonies and functions of state either along with, or in place of, the president or governor. The first lady often sponsors or participates in charitable and humanitarian projects that usually are not politically divisive. It is common for the first lady to hire a staff to support her in her activities.
The State Historical Society holds resources that document and illustrate the lives of U.S. first ladies who were born or lived in Missouri. You can learn about the lives of famous Missouri first ladies by selecting each name.
