A French writer named M. P. Vissier gave a description of the Osage when they arrived in France: “Their costume, their arms, the color of their reddish-copper skin, the beauty and regularity of their immobile features, everything about them was an object of surprise. Everyone pushed near them, to touch their hands, and to receive from them a gesture gracious and full of nobleness.” [McMillen, Into the Spotlight: Four Missouri Women, p. 25.] According to McMillen and Roberson, Vissier also provided an estimate of their height, with the men being about 5 feet 5 inches and the women about 5 feet tall. |
