This engraving of Daniel Boone was made by James Barton Longacre for an 1837 Missouri State Bond. Notice the dark-dyed beaver felt hat in Boone’s left hand. He is often portrayed wearing the coonskin cap of a frontiersman, but he disliked that type of hat. He preferred a broad-brimmed hat–much like the ones his Quaker relatives wore–and which provided protection from the sun.
