Bingham submitted his genre painting Watching the Cargo to the American Art-Union in New York City for sale on August 1, 1849. It was exhibited there and purchased by the Union, which awarded the painting to Stephen E. Paine of New York at the Union’s annual meeting in December 1849. (Bloch, The Paintings of George Caleb Bingham, p. 181).
