About This Web Site

The State Historical Society of Missouri has specifically created the Famous Missourians Web site to assist elementary school students in their study of Missouri history and famous Missourians during the fourth-grade year of instruction. It is intended to provide students with textual and visual materials not readily accessible to them in school media centers and public libraries. This site meets the following Show-Me State Standards for Social Studies: 2, 6, and 7. It also meets the Missouri Grade Level Expectation Objective (DESE) 2a.A.

In addition to serving the educational needs of elementary students throughout Missouri, The State Historical Society of Missouri hopes that this electronic biographical site will be of use and value to Missourians of all ages. In various ways, the Missourians featured on this site brought about or contributed to the growth and development of Missouri as a territory and important state in the Union.

The goal is to provide a biographical entry on each Famous Missourian for which The State Historical Society of Missouri has images and primary resources. Subjects included on the Web site should no longer be living. Every effort will be made to include biographies that will add to each student’s knowledge of the state and the people who contributed something to our history in both small and large ways.

The brain-child of Carlynn Trout, a freelance writer of educational materials and author of Notable Women of Missouri, this site is produced and maintained by the staff of The State Historical Society of Missouri.
