Gen. Thomas Lawson Price, 1809-1870

Oil on canvas, 1859/1860
acc. #1977.0004
Born near Danville, Virginia. Thomas Price came to Missouri in 1831 and settled in Jefferson City. A successful merchant and land speculator, he established the first stage line between St. Louis and Jefferson City in 1838. The following year, he became the first mayor of Jefferson City. A Benton Democrat, he entered politics in the 1840s and served as lieutenant governor, 1849-1852. Price took his seat in the Twenty-first General Assembly in January 1861, only to have that position interrupted by the Civil War. He was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1862 to complete the term left vacant by the removal of John W. Reid.
Thomas Price Gibson of Lafayette, California, presented this portrait to the State Historical Society in 1977.
