Minerva Hays Newman, a native Virginian born in Wythe County, came to Boone County as a young girl. She was the wife of Albert Gallatin Newman, Columbia businessman and legislator. Her portrait, painted by Bingham, was acquired by the Society, August 12, 1965, from Mrs. Arthur Newman, Columbia.
