Albert Gallatin Newman, 1808-1888

Oil on canvas, ca. 1870
acc. #1965-0004
Born in Staunton, Virginia, Albert Gallatin Newman moved to Columbia, Missouri, in 1837. A tinner by trade, he established the Newman Hardware Store in 1843 and played an important role in civic affairs. In 1858 he was an unsuccessful Democratic nominee for the legislature, suffering defeat by only a few votes. Several years later, in 1870, he won election to the state house of representatives.
This Bingham portrait was acquired by the Society, August 12, 1965, from Mrs. Arthur Newman, Columbia.
