Columbia Research Center

Founded in 1898 by the Missouri Press Association and a trustee of the state since 1899, The State Historical Society of Missouri is the premier research center for the study of Missouri state and local history. SHSMO's mission is to collect, preserve, make available, and publish materials that enhance research and support learning opportunities in Missouri studies and the history of the Midwest. Society holdings include rare and specialized books; an extensive newspaper collection dating from 1808 with newspapers from all 114 Missouri counties and the city of St. Louis; editorial cartoons that are national in scope; thousands of maps and photographic images; oral histories; unique manuscript collections; and, major artworks by George Caleb Bingham and Thomas Hart Benton. The Columbia research center houses a significant art collection with ongoing and varied exhibitions and serves as the administrative headquarters for SHSMO.

SHSMO is on the ground floor, east side of the Ellis Library in the heart of the University of Missouri-Columbia campus, east of Jesse Hall (the building with the dome) and west of Memorial Union (the Gothic tower) on Hitt Street.

Road Closures

Sections of Hitt Street, Ninth Street, and Rollins Street near SHSMO are closed to automobile traffic on weekdays, 8:15 a.m. - 3:45 p.m. when the University is in session.

To access the Hitt Street Visitor Lot when University classes are in session, take College Ave to Rollins St, turn West onto Rollins St, then turn North at the intersection with Hitt St.

There is metered parking along Hitt Street and University Avenue.
